NO School this Friday, February 20, 2009!
The school calendar just lists this day as a recess.
If you haven't been to one of the school skates yet.....there is a LOT of energy! The kids have a great time not only skating but playing games and interacting with each other. The parents also have a good time! You get the opportunity to meet parents that perhaps your children have talked about wanting to do things with but you were not comfortable since you didn't know the family. Even though we live in a small community we do still have the obstacle of finding the time to meet each other. Come, skate, visit and have a great time! If you haven't been skating since you were younger....it hurts worse for longer when you fall now! Speaking from experience.
I missed this great event (which I won't next year!) however Pastor Scott T. Porath was nice enough to send me pictures and write something up about it.
The Pancake Supper is an annual event for the men of the Immanuel Lutheran Mission Society (ILMS), an auxiliary group at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The menu consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage (links and patties) and drinks.
Pastor Porath wasn't sure how many people were served. It started out slower than normal, but by the end of the night they were out of eggs, bacon and sausage. One gentleman only received pancakes, and when Pastor Porath went over to say that how sorry he was, the man replied: "I came for pancakes and you have pancakes, so no problem." (paraphrased)
The proceeds for this supper have not been specifically designated by the ILMS, but along with other funds, will be used to sponsor the annual Christian Life Conference at Immanuel in the fall. For this conference they invite in a speaker to address various areas of the Christian's vocation. Past topics include: "Christians as the Royal Priesthood," "How Faith Goes to Work," "The Christian Prayer Life," "The Vocation of Citizenship," "Christian Husband and Wife," "Preachers and Hearers," "The Christian and Medical Science," and "The Christian Vocation of Suffering." This year's conference is yet to be determined, but the entire community is always invited to attend.
The ILMS also uses proceeds to help support a seminary student studying to become a pastor. They currently have a member of their congregation (Chris Gerdes, from Palmyra) studying for the Holy Ministry at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The ILMS also supports the work of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation which translates, publishes and distributes various Lutheran books into a variety of languages around the world.
