Second Graders at Eagle Elementary who went above and beyond.  Congratulations!

Eagle Garage Sales!

Eagle Garage Sales are almost here!  They are always the held the first full weekend in June.  This year the dates are June 6 and 7.  It's just $2.00 to register your garage sale.  This puts your address on the map that is delivered to every house registered to be posted those days.  It also helps pay for the advertisement of the garage sales.  Last but not least it allows you to place your unwanted items at your curb Sunday to be picked up by Bits and Pieces of Elmwood.  This is a great opportunity to have a successful garage sale.  The area garage sales are very popular and Eagle is lucky to have a good following of people just waiting for the first weekend in June to come around!  I will try and have the registration on here to be downloaded and printed out at your convenience.  Otherwise, they can be found at Eagle State Bank, Lou's Grocery, The One Eyed Dog, American Exchange Bank, Kabredlos, Casey's and Corner Cafe.

School is OUT!

Eagle Elementary is out as of Tuesday, May 19 at 3:05 and Waverly will be out as of Wednesday, May 20 at 12:05.

Well, my kids are planning their days of doing nothing as I am putting this together!  I believe the first thing on the list is...sleeping in.

I will try and include different pictures of summer events as the summer runs along.

Eagle Elementary Fun Run

It started out a bit cold and windy!  But after running just a few blocks you warmed up quickly.  There were people signing up from Omaha and Lincoln both as well as several of our own residents!

The kids all did a great job.  One mile.  Doesn't seem like much.  But the kids ran further than I could!  And I have been running several mornings a week for the last 2 months now!

Here are a few pictures from the event.  I will have a break down of the winners and more pictures next week.

A BIG THANK YOU to Wendy Retzlaff and Sara Martin for all their hard work and countless hours you put into to this!  You with the rest of the volunteers did a fabulous job!

Study tracks economic effects of travel and tourism throughout Nebraska
LINCOLN, NEB. (May 8, 2009)—A new study completed for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Travel and Tourism Division indicates that travel and tourism has contributed meaningfully to the economies of all the state’s 93 counties. Dean Runyan Associates conducted the study that breaks down the economic effects of the travel industry, county by county. The company has conducted similar research for a number of other states.
For most of Nebraska’s counties, the study reports 2008 data on direct travel spending by visitors, the resulting earnings and employment, and local and state tax revenues generated.  For those 31 counties recording the greatest travel spending, breakdowns are shown by industry (accommodations, retail, transportation, etc.) and for each of six years from 2003 through 2008.
“This is the most detailed study of the economic effects of travel and tourism in Nebraska’s counties yet produced,” said Christian Hornbaker, Travel and Tourism Division director. “For many years, we’ve reported the large and steadily growing contribution of the industry to the overall state economy, however this study now details the industry’s local effects, too. We’re grateful to the Nebraska Travel Association and Nebraska Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus that helped cover the costs of the study.”
Omaha and Douglas County have the largest share of the travel industry of any county in the state. But as a percent of the total local economy, the industry especially stands out in Nebraska’s rural areas. For example, in Mullen and Hooker County, it accounts for 17.5 percent of all earnings; in Thedford and Thomas County, it generates 30.8 percent of all taxable sales; and in Ogallala and Keith County, one of every 13 jobs is in the travel industry.

The study, Nebraska Travel Impacts, 2003-2008, is among much information about the industry, as well as what is available to see and do in the state—all which can be found at the Travel and Tourism Division website at www.visitnebraska.gov/industry
The nation’s tourism industry will be formally recognized during National Travel and Tourism Week, May 9-17, with the official summer travel season getting underway Memorial Day weekend.

 Happy Memorial Day!
As most of our nations history this story behind this holiday is pretty interesting.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day.  It was a way to remember those who had died in our nation's service.  There are over two dozen cities and towns claiming to be the first to celebrate Memorial Day.  President Lyndon Johnson actually declared the birthplace of Memorial Day offically to Waterloo, NY in May 1966.  It is more likely that it orignated by many different towns and cities each holding their own celebrations in rememberance of fallen friends and family.  Where and when it began is not the important thing.  Memorial Day was established as a way to honor those who gave their very all.
In 1915, insprired by the poem "In Flanders Fields" Moina Michael replied with her own poem.
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
So, Happy Memorial Day!  I hope you are able to enjoy it with friends, family and food!  Three very important "F's"!  Have Fun and Be Safe!
