 Vandalism Strikes Eagle Cemetary

Vandals have struck a headstone at the Eagle Cemetary.  A year and a half ago there was some fund raising for the funeral and headstone of the deceased.  "It's like a slap in the face for everyone who was involved in the fund raising", I was told by one person.  Please, if you know anything about this call the Sheriffs Department.  The vandalism needs to STOP.  The people or person responsible needs to be held accountable.  The cost to our community and individual citizens is on the rise.

At the Board of Education Meeting last night the board passed the following
motion 5-0, "to approve the use of Eagle Elementary for the expansion of the
Foundation for Education's Before/After School Program as specified in Board
Policy 1315."

Eagle Food Bank Very LOW

Times are very tough and our local Food Bank is feeling the pressure.  We are fortunate to have our own Food Bank and know that what we donate goes right back into our community.  The Food Bank is very low on all items right now.  Anything you use at home is needed at our Food Bank.  Things needed include but are not limited to: Cans of food, boxed food, toilet paper, paper towels, baby food, formula, diapers, baby wipes, feminine products.  You can also make a cash donation that will allow the Food Bank to purchase items they need or turn it into gift certificates to Lou's Grocery to purchase items the Food Bank is not able to store.

Food can be dropped of at Eagle State Bank or call 580-0960 and GeoAnn Reynoldson will be glad to pick it up with in the Eagle area.

Another Letter Regarding Parking Situation at Eagle Elementary School.

You may have noticed the change in available parking spaces on Tuesday.  I received the following letter prior to these changes being made.  I am going to include it so that they still have their voice.  The author of the letter makes several good points and I hope that it helps everyone reach a common goal, keeping our kids safe.

The teachers at Eagle Elementary have been asked to park in the furthest spaces in the parking lot designated for parent parking instead of the spaces directly across from the school in the same lot.  While it is appreciated that those spaces have opened we are hoping that it is the spaces in the teacher lot that will be better utilized or if absolutely necessary the spaces in the middle of the parent lot.  Non the less, the teachers have stepped up to try and figure out a better solution to this parking problem.

As I pulled into the lot on Tuesday not only did I notice the open spaces but I also noticed a car parked in the loop with several spaces open in all three lines.  I am asking that the parents to please follow the parking guidelines.  There is no parking in the loop.  As we are trying to figure out a better solution, you are being asked to use good judgement.  As the letter below  states.....this is for the safety of the children, not our own conveniences.  I would also love to hear from our teachers and know what their opinion of this is.  While the changes have begun I think we need to keep working.  If you have a suggestion or opinion, please email me at editor@eaglenebraska.com.  Thanks!

Terra,

Thank you for writing about the issue of parking at the school.  I agree that it is a problem that needs to be addressed because it keeps getting worse every day.

As I see it there are two issues - where people park their vehicles and utilizing parking that is available in the "student" lot.   In regard to where people park their vehicles, I understand that there are spaces not being used in the north and east lot which is reserved for staff only.  The second issue is people picking up children and not utilizing the parking that is available.  Last Friday when I arrived at school there were cars lined all around the circle and down the drive.  I had to get out of my car and ask someone to pull forward so that I could park in one of the few spaces available.  After I parked, the person parked beside me had to tap on the window of the car that had blocked her in and ask that person to move so that she could pull out.

Having an elementary parking lot in disarray at the end of the day is a safety issue for children which should be everyone's top priority.   Friday, as with most days, there were not enough spaces for everyone in the south student lot.  I realize that it was a busier day at school due to Heritage Days.  However, I believe this problem could be addressed, at least partially, by having staff park in the north and east lots which is designated for their use only.  (Some staff currently park in the south pick-up lot because it is closest to the doors, exterior & interior, that they have keys for.)  Parking in the east lot might not be the most convenient for staff but with traffic increasing significantly I believe this is in the best interest of children.  (As part of my job I manage trainings and know what it is like to have a lot of materials that need to be carried into a classroom so I use a fold up 2-wheel dolly that is very portable and allows me to easily transport my supplies.)

People picking up students also have to take responsibility for the disarray.  When picking up children from school, park your vehicle.  I realize that we are a hurry up society and parking takes time but it is the responsible thing to do.

I ask everyone -- what is more important, saving a couple of seconds, saving a few steps, or having a parking lot that is orderly and safe for our children?

Out of respect for Principal Heusman I did bring up my concerns with her and expressed my hope that parents and staff could collaborate and come up with some creative solutions to the parking problems.  I was told that it is something that administration needs to deal with not individual parents.  As an active mediator I see the benefits of collaboration and the benefits of letting everyone express their perspectives.  It is amazing how that type of process opens up the door to options that are not thought of when just one side is deals with an issue.  However, I have high hopes that the school administration will evaluate the situation and implement a plan that creates an environment that is safe and appropriate for everyone involved.

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

EXPANDED ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT LOCAL PUMPKIN PATCH

Bloom Where You're Planted Farm Announces New Attractions for Fifth Season

Guests attending the fifth-annual Pumpkin Festival at Bloom Where You're Planted Farm, rural Avoca, NE, will be treated to some new attractions this season.  The pumpkin patch and agri-entertainment venue has been expanded for 2009 to include hay rides and the newly renovated Schoolhouse Café.

"For many people, when they think of the ultimate pumpkin patch experience they envision a hay ride out to the pumpkin field.  We are very excited to finally be able to offer this experience to our customers," say farm owners Terry and Teresa Lorensen.

A certified concession kitchen has been added to the 1890's one-room schoolhouse which the Lorensens moved to the farm and restored last year.  Guests can order from the lunch menu which includes hot sandwiches and homemade pie, and then enjoy their meal at tables in the authentically restored classroom.

"This is a one-of-a-kind dining experience.  While we've been serving lunch for the past three seasons, having a certified kitchen and a building dedicated to the Café will allow us to better serve our customers, will make work easier for our employees, and should offer us new opportunities to produce our own baked goods and food mixes in the future," Teresa Lorensen said.

Bloom Where You're Planted Farm's Pumpkin Festival runs every Friday through Sunday from September 19th to November 1st.  Hours are 1:00-6:00 p.m. Fridays and 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.  The farm is open at other times by appointment for field trips and parties.  The $4.00 admission charge includes access to all the attractions on the farm, including the opportunity for every visitor to take a hay ride.

For a complete schedule of events, which include special days such as Military Family Weekend, Doggy Day to benefit the Capital Humane Society, and Ag Day with the Conestoga High School FFA, visit the farm's website, www.BloomPumpkinPatch.com

Eagle website readers,

My name is Valentin Poposki; I'm a member of Flags of the World (FotW) mailing-list, devoted to flags. We aim to present flags from all parts of the World on our website: <http://flagspot.net/flags/index.html>.
I write to you in hope that you can help me find information regarding the flag of the Village of Eagle NE, so it can be presented properly on Flags of the World. We are interested in any kind of flag - official or unofficial, centennial, former or obsolete flag, or even the flag of some of the departments. To do this, we would need an image of the flag, or even a clear photo of a real flag. (Any graphical format would do: gif, jpg, png, bmp, ...) This image would then be used to base a standard FotW image on, which will be used on the website. To do this we hope to add other information about your flag, like the adoption date, the official description and meaning, the name of the flag designer, etc. if available.
I'm also involved in the preparation of a twin-website, Emblems of the World (EotW). For this, I hope you can provide me with an image of the official seal or logo of your village, as well as with the same data as for the flag.

Yours faithfully

Recycling in Eagle!

RecycleLink is now in Eagle!  Currently, they have about 40 households in Eagle recycling and  would like to let the rest of the town know how easy and much trash has been saved from the landfill because of their participation in recycling at the curb. They will also be contacting the elementary school to see if they would be interested in participating in our Green Schools Grant program. Green Schools is a way RecycleLink gives back to local schools to help raise funds for green education. Last year they raised over $2400 to help purchase recycling containers, plant trees, build a can collection point and host field trips to our recycling facility.

Some quick facts about what they do:

RecycleLink offers every customer a 65 gallon cart to mix all the households recyclables in, no need to sort, peel labels or remove lids

The RecycleLink cart keeps the recyclables in one place on windy days keeping the neighborhoods clean and free of blowing papers

RecycleLink customers in Eagle along with Lincoln area recyclers recycle nearly triple the national average each month by recycling over 70 Lbs a month

RecycleLink customers put their recyclables to work saving them over $25 a month on groceries, dining out, clothing, gift cards, magazines, and much more when using their RecycleBank Points.

Customer can also donate their points to schools and local non profits helping raise money for those in need

You can also check out our local website www.recyclelink.net and our partner's national site www.recyclebank.com
