Eagle Nebraska

I wrote last week about a local business closing and how important it is to support our community.  While I believe this is important I also believe it's important for our businesses to support our community which includes those who work and volunteer here.  It will take all of us together, working together to help our community grow and prosper.  Not just one person can do this, but one person can be responsible for so much negativity that it effects the good that so many people have worked so hard to accomplish.  Please think about this the next time you work to destroy something due to a few people on a committee.  The people that you are truly hurting are the ones that are behind the scenes volunteering and for most of our organizations, it is the youth of our community that these organizations are here.

One of our local groups is asking for your help.  The Alvo/Eagle Rec group is in need of volunteers.  They have rescheduled their Rec Committee meeting to this Thursday at the Eagle United Methodist Church at 7:00pm.  There are a lot of different positions they need help with.  If you are able to donate any of your time to this organization, please plan on attending this meeting or contacting one of the committee members to let them know how you can help.

This committee is here to offer many opportunities to our youth in the form of sports.  My three children have been involved with this group and have a great time all summer long!  I also had an adult softball team last fall.  I believe we came in last but had a fabulous time doing it!

Alvo/Eagle Rec Meeting Rescheduled!

Last week's Rec Committee meeting has been rescheduled for this Thursday, February 25th at 7:00pm at the Methodist Church in Eagle.  We are in great need of more involvement on this committee and are encouraging any parents who would like to get involved to come to our next meeting.  Hope to see you there!

Lofte Community Theatre Volunteer Recognition

imgp0132_edited.jpg

Pictured:  Lynn Plucknett and Nikki Biesterfeld of Louisville are just two of the many volunteers that it takes to make the Lofte a success.

Manley, NE [February 9, 2010]- Each February the Lofte Community Theatre takes a deep breath before the start of its new season. An evening is set aside to salute its volunteers and honor them with food and gifts. This year, the Volunteer Recognition and Annual Meeting is set for Saturday, February 27th at 6pm.

The Dale Crosby Awards will be given to three of the Lofte's most outstanding volunteers. The award is named in honor of long-time Lofte President and friend, Dale Crosby of Weeping Water whom we lost in 2001. Mr. Crosby was a man who never found any job too small or unimportant. His dedication and hard work inspired many and he is still sorely missed.

In conjunction with the Volunteer Recognition activities, the Lofte Board of Directors will conduct a short business meeting to inform the public of its financial standing and plans for the future. Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert will review the 2009 season highlighting his favorite performances and fondest memories. He will also announce his show selections for the 2011 season.

All members of the Lofte Community Theatre are invited to attend. Membership is earned if you have ever purchased a ticket, volunteered your time, donated funds or performed on stage. Basically, if you've ever been to the Lofte or helped in any way, you're invited! The evening is your chance to relax, catch-up with old friends and enjoy some delicious food.

Please RSVP for this event by calling the box office at (402) 234-2553 or emailing Jean Colbert at LofteTickets@Lofte.com

Podcasting Along Nebraska Byways

Podcasts are a way for Nebraska scenic byway groups to bring live, up-to-date information about the unique attractions and natural beauty along their byway to potential visitors, said Connie Francis, extension educator with the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and the Nebraska Rural Initiative will host a "Podcasting Along Nebraska Byways" workshop in Cozad on March 8.  The workshop is specifically targeted to those involved in promoting the nine Nebraska scenic byways.  It will give participants an opportunity to create and publish their own podcasts for use on byway web sites or by businesses along the byway to promote their region.

The workshop will be held Monday, March 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.at the Wilson Memorial Library, Cozad.   The day-long class will include creating an outline, writing the narrative, and producing and publishing a podcast episode.  Registration is limited to 10 participants, so register early.

Cost of the class is $75 with preregistration requested by March 1.  Cost includes materials and lunch.  Register online at http://cariregistration.unl.edu/.    To register by phone, contact the UNL Center for Applied Rural Innovation at 800-328-2851.  Information about what to bring to the workshop will be provided upon registration.

Podcasting is a great way to promote tourism, travel, recreation, historic sites and other activities.  Many communities and regions are creating podcasts to guide downtown walking tours and driving tours of their historic areas.  Having creative content and good-quality photos are keys to producing an effective podcast.  It can be a fun and effective way to promote Nebraska's scenic byways to potential visitors.

___________________________
Connecting Young Nebraskans, (CYN) is a social network of young Nebraskans who have joined together to discuss and take action to promote change in Nebraska. In past years, it seems that the voice of young Nebraskans has been missing on many important issues. In an effort to address this, the University of Nebraska Rural Initiative would like to encourage and support the formation and ongoing operation of a 'Young Nebraskans' group. This group will belong to its members so it's up to you to help shape it into something you want to be a part of.

Our current vision is for this group to focus on socializing by exchanging ideas, supporting others interests, and learning new things; while also bringing a young viewpoint and voice to shape the future of communities, regions and the state.  Communication will be facilitated by online social networking, electronic conversations, meetings via polycom, or other technology in addition to a possible yearly face-to-face gathering. In addition to its practical uses, this group will provide a way to meet new young Nebraskans and find out about opportunities, educational resources and fun activities.

Connecting Young Nebraskans will be coordinated by the Nebraska Rural Initiative, but the leadership structure and direction will be determined by the network (you). We believe that each young Nebraskan has something to bring to the table, whether it is policy related, social, lifestyle, or socially based, CYN can help you find others who share the same interests and concerns.

Now is the time to join the CYN Network and start asking those critical questions that will affect your lifestyle in Nebraska! If you know someone who may be interested or who can benefit from CYN, please email Kayla at
kchurchill4@unl.edu This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and ask to add them to the email list. Keep in mind that any successful group takes time to mature and grow, so be patient throughout this development process, and make suggestions about how the future of our state will look for you.

CYN was established because we want to help you enjoy
your community by broadening your horizon
of what's possible!

"Capital City Buddy Walk" on

October 2, 2010 at 8:00am.

Event: Capital City Buddy Walk
       "Who is YOUR buddy?"
What: Fundraiser
Start Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 8:00am
End Time: Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11:00am
Where: Antelope Park

The one-mile, Capital City Buddy Walk, hosted by the Down Syndrome Association for Families.

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise funds for education, research and advocacy programs. The walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 280 nationwide (one in every state) with over 230,000 participants.

Many of you probably already know Natasha and James Dobbins.  They have two beautiful children Lily and Jimmy "Buddy".  Buddy was born with Down Syndrome as well as other complications.  He had open heart surgery on August 3, 2009. He had complications from a nicked lymph node...which caused what they called a chylothorax with plural infusion. Which means they nicked the lymph node and that caused the lining of his right lung to fill with fluid and lipils, which collapsed his right lung. We have dealt with apnea monitors, oximeters, oxygen, prescription formula, feeding tube and all kinds of stuff. RIGHT NOW... he's fine. He is almost 9 months and 13 lbs. He is still on lasix, prilosec, and sildenafil. But that should be short lived. All thats left is to deal with the down syndrome. Which I can deal with. ;)

The Dobbins family is inviting everyone to join them in the "Buddy" walk on October 2nd at Antelope Park.  They would love to see a big team from their town there to support them!
