What's New at Eagle Elementary:
I don't have too much report right now as I have had my hands full with work.
A committee did meet to go over new by-laws for the newly developed Parents and Teachers of Eagle group. The meeting was long but when the group walked away the by-laws were mostly complete.
The new before school procedures have begun for Eagle Elementary students. One of the clubs students are able to join is the "Walk Across America" club. All students at Eagle received a pedometer. My own third grader was pretty excited about how many steps she was going to record in a day. It was fun to see her so excited!
Parking still seems to be a problem both before and after school. Several comments have been made that something needs to change. A few suggestions were to have parents drop off in front of the school on 1st street, have the buses load and unload on the north side of the school like they do in the afternoon, have parents drop off on the north side of the school and have the kids walk around to the south side.....
As far as I know, leveled math (or lack of), consistant disapline procedures for school (RTP) and communicaton with parents are still big concerns with parents. These issues have not been adressed. They cannot pushed aside. It's going to take a lot of communication and working together to find solutions and compromises.
A committee organized by Heather Brown is looking into a program called "Safe Routes to School". This program creates environments that encourage walking and biking to school. It is taught that teaching kids to be heathly today helps them lead healthier lives as adults. The goal of Safe Routes Nebraska (and the National Center for Safe Routes to School) is to provide funds for school and community groups to build safer routes to school. These improvements include engineering solutions as well as safety training, awareness and strategies to encourage children to walk and bike to school safely.
Letter to the Editor:
Eagle students are now beginning their 2nd week under Mrs. Heusman’s revised playground plan.
Thanks to parents with some common sense – at least 50% of Eagle students get to experience “free play” on their playground before school begins.
Of course, the other 50% sit in lines and simulate exercise by clicking their pedometers or are allowed to participate in clubs (reading, walking & breakfast).
I am still confused regarding the “safety concerns” which apparently led to the need for a new playground plan. And a listing of other schools which also have children sit in lines before school may or may not be relevant – depending on the specific circumstances of each school (Example – long bus rides???).
At the Parent “Playground Meeting”, I thought parents provided an excellent alternative to address the potential “bullying” and/or “safety concerns” for kindergartners by suggesting the assignment of 5th grade “buddies”. This solution would have benefitted both kindergartners and 5th graders, while still allowing “free play”.
Ironically, an article by John Rosemond (Parenting Columnist) appeared in the Lincoln Journal Star last week. In his article, Mr. Rosemond wrote:
Children “are overseen, supervised, directed and micromanaged from morning until night by well-intentioned adults who claim to care about children but seem to know nothing about childhood. And so, the variable most lacking in the lives of children who currently live in the Land of the Free is freedom itself.
Eagle parents need to stay alert and continue asking questions about all aspects of their children’s education and learning environment.

Step Up for Down Syndrome!
Many of you probably already know Natasha and James Dobbins. They have two beautiful children Lily and Jimmy "Buddy". Buddy was born with Down Syndrome as well as other complications. He had open heart surgery on August 3, 2009. He had complications from a nicked lymph node...which caused what they called a chylothorax with plural infusion. Which means they nicked the lymph node and that caused the lining of his right lung to fill with fluid and lipils, which collapsed his right lung. They have dealt with apnea monitors, oximeters, oxygen, prescription formula, feeding tube and all kinds of stuff.
Natasha Dobbins is setting up a team for the Step Up for Down Syndrome. Team Bubba! Let's get Eagle together for this little boy!
This year's one-mile, 9th annual Step Up for Down syndrome Walk, hosted by the Down Syndrome Association for Families, will take place - rain or shine - Saturday, October 2, 2010.
WHERE: Across from the Barrier-Free Playground
Antelope Park (near 30th & A) in Lincoln, NE
WHEN: Registration and Festivities begin at 8:00 a.m.
Walk started at 9:30 a.m.
WHO: This is a family event, so strollers and wagons are welcome.
No pets, bikes, or roller blades are allowed.

Elmwood Christian Church “Walk and Worship”
Elmwood, NE [September 7, 2010]- Pastor Mark Sheldon of Elmwood’s Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) recently announced his church’s implementation of “Walk and Worship,” Each Thursday night, those who are interested may meet at the Elmwood Christian Church at 7pm for a period of brief prayer and meditation followed by a stroll around the town or down the Mopac trail. The church is located in Elmwood on 5th Street, just across from the city park.
“We want to be a church that is active in the community. We want to get out there and share the Gospel in a way that appeals to everyone. Hopefully we will be joined by several people who want to be thankful for God’s gifts while enjoying them at the same time!”
Participation in the Thursday night Walk and Worship is free and open to everyone. A long and a short route will be made available.
