When you go to cast your vote on November 4th, an issue dealing with adding fluoride to the Eagle drinking water supply will be on the ballot.  The state legislature passed a law that requires all villages/cities whose population exceeds 1,000 to add fluoride to their drinking water unless a vote of the people shows they do not want it.  To be as simple as we can, your vote of YES on this issue will mean do NOT add fluoride to our water and a vote of NO will mean to treat our water supply with fluoride.   To be able to make the best educated decision as possible you can find both sides of the issue here....

The Village Board has taken the stand that we do NOT desire to add fluoride to the water supply for the following reasons:

1)    Our current water supply naturally contains 0.3 to 0.4 parts per million (ppm) already.  The state desires the water to have a 1.0 ppm level or a difference of 0.6 to 0.7 ppm.

2)    Fluoride will be added to all the water that we pump from our wells.  In addition to the water that you drink where young children may benefit from the added fluoride, the water that you water your gardens or lawns with will have fluoride in it.  The water that you flush down your stool in the bathroom will have fluoride in it; the water that you wash your clothes or dishes in will have fluoride in it.  In other words, 75 to perhaps 90 percent of the water that you use without either drinking it or preparing your food in it will not benefit your children because it winds up in our sewer plant or is allowed to soak into the ground.

3)    Regular visits to the dentist for fluoride treatments and the use of good fluoride toothpaste may provide your children and you with a good source of fluoride without adding more fluoride to our drinking water.  Again, we already have 0.3 to 0.4 ppm in our water without adding any.

4)    Even though it is unhealthy, a lot of families drink soda rather than the Village drinking water and a few even purchase bottled water or have it delivered to their homes instead of drinking our water.  Having to treat our water with fluoride will not benefit these families.

5)    If the voters in the Village of Eagle desire to have fluoride added to our water supply by voting NO on this ballot issue, then the cost of the fluoride and the cost of the equipment that we would have to add to our water system would have to be added to (passed on to you) the water bills. The Village fluoride costs are roughly $47.25 per month which will be spread out over the total number of water users based upon the amount of water each residence uses while the cost of the engineering and equipment/building needed to inject the fluoride into our water is estimated at costs of $14,000 to $18,000 and may be added to your water bills as well.

6)    We believe this is an issue where the people should make such a decision rather than have government force their decisions on you.  The government “forced” the our small Village into building a new sewer plant while letting big cities such as Omaha dump some of their sewage into the Missouri River when they have sewer plant problems.  With this ballot issue, you can tell the state government they were wrong with their mandate to force all villages/cities with 1,000 people or more into adding fluoride to their drinking water supplies.

After you understand what you are voting on, a vote of YES on the ballot issue means fluoride will NOT be added to our drinking water supply and its expenses will not be added to your water bill.

A vote of NO on the ballot issue means we, the Village, will begin to add fluoride to the drinking water supply by June 1, 2010 and its expenses will be added to your water.

COMMUNITY WATER FLUORIDATION FACT SHEET

Fluoridation is a community health measure that benefits people of all ages.

Fluoridation is safe.

Fluoridation saves money.

Fluoridation protects over 300 million people in more than 40 countries worldwide, with over 10,000 communities and 145 million people in the United States alone.

Fluoridation exists naturally in rocks, soil, fresh water and ocian water; and is essential for protection of teeth from dental decay.

If a community's water supply is fluoride-deficient (less than 0.7 parts per million), fluoridation simply adjusts the fluoride's natural level, bringing it to the level recommended for decay prevention (0.7 - 1.2 parts per million)

Studies show that water fluoridation results in up to 60% less decay in baby teeth, and up to 35% less decay in adult teeth.

Over 50 years of research and practical experience have demonstrated that there are no harmful effects as a result of fluoridation.

Leading scientists and health professionals, numerous professional organizations, and governments around the world endorse eommunity water fluoridation.  The Unted States Public Health Service recommends community water fluoridation to prevent dental decay.

Numerous city councils and health boards decide to initiate fluoridation each year.  Enlightened community leaders have come to realize that fluoridation is in the best interests of their entire community - adults and children - even senior citizens.

Once water fluoridation begins in a community, it should not be discontinues.  If fluoridation stops, tooth decay rates will rose once again.

Depending on the size of the community, its labor costs and the kind of equipment that is used, water fluoridation costs about 20-50 cents per person per year.

Information regarding costs associated with community water fluoridation equipment and supplies, or the existing level of fluoride in your community's water, can be obtained by calling your local or state health department, local water supplier, or the Oral Health Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
